Driving a Hiab-equipped lorry on UK roads requires a standard category C (or C+E if articulated) HGV licence, with a current Driver CPC and tachograph compliance. That covers the driving side of the job: the vehicle on the road.
How it works in practice
Operating the Hiab itself (the crane) is a separate competency. The industry standard certifications are ALLMI (Association of Lorry Loader Manufacturers and Importers) and CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme). Most operators carry one or both; some sites (especially large construction sites) require a specific card before allowing the crane to lift.
What it means for your job
If you’re booking a Hiab for a job, you don’t need any licence of your own. The operator and the truck are our responsibility. If you do want to see paperwork (insurance, ALLMI / CPCS cards, O-licence) before a job, ask us up front and we’ll send copies through.
