Use a normal lorry when: the load is light and palletised, the drop-off has clear forklift access, the route is straightforward, and there’s no need to lift anything off the truck. A standard rigid wagon with a tail-lift or kerbside drop is more than enough.
How it works in practice
Use a Hiab when: the load is heavy or awkward to handle, the drop-off has restricted access (fences, walls, soft ground, no forklift, rear garden), the load needs to be placed precisely (not just dumped), or you’d otherwise need a forklift hire AND a separate crane company on top of the haulage.
What it means for your job
Quick test: ‘Can the load roll off the truck and be wheeled or carried to its final position in five minutes?’ If yes, a normal lorry works. If no — if you’d need a forklift, a crane, or four people manhandling it — the Hiab is the right call. It costs more than basic haulage, but less than haulage plus crane hire.
