How Far Can a Hiab Reach?

Guides

Reach depends on the crane size. A small road-going Hiab might have a horizontal reach of 6-10m. Medium cranes typically reach 10-15m. The longest commonly road-legal Hiabs go beyond 20m, though usually with reducing lift capacity as the boom extends.

How it works in practice

At maximum reach a Hiab can only lift a small fraction of its rated capacity. Real-world planning balances weight against reach: ‘how heavy is the load, and how far does the crane need to reach to place it safely?’ We look at this before every job and confirm what’s possible on the chart.

What it means for your job

Practical examples: lifting a hot tub from a flatbed parked at the kerb, over a 6ft fence, into a back garden 5-8m from the truck — well within a typical Hiab’s envelope. Lifting a heavy plant item the full 15m to the far end of a garden — depends on the weight and crane spec.
